Power, inventiveness, and energetic story-telling are often found in our venue. However, here at The National, imagination and story-telling are not confined to the stage. In addition to quality touring productions on the main stage, The National also presents the following free programs:
- The Saturday Morning Live! At The National program has delighted children for years with events to engage and inspire the young mind. Interactive performances, puppets, dance, and music encourage children to look outside their communities and discover a world of wonder.
- The Community Stage Connections program has provided communities with limited access to the arts with live arts experiences for over 30 years. We currently work with non-profit organizations that serve communities with limited resources and mobility. Working in collaboration with these venues, and a roster of participating performing artists, The National arranges easily transportable theatrical and musical performances free of charge for the residents and communities of these venues. With the help of a generous donor that has been supporting this program throughout its tenure, our artists are paid an honorarium for their work.
- The High School Ticket Program is a collaborative effort between The National, Young Playwrights’ Theater and Duke Ellington School of the Arts, that enhances the education of high school students by providing access to Broadway productions. A key component of this program is the opportunity for the students to talk with theatre professionals, who give insight into the industry.
Additionally, one of the greatest assets of this theatre is the legacy of its past. The National is home to a treasure trove of Washington theatrical history – playbills and historical items of The National Theatre, from 1835 to the present, are preserved in our Archives.
These programs and others are made possible in part by the support of many. If you would like to make a contribution to help us continue these wonderful programs please visit our donor page or contact us at 202-783-3370.
